Another thing about meta is that you don’t need to filter it through narrative and (arguably) stylistic elements. But then again, you need meta, at least to some extent, to write fics, so hmm.
Exactly! Meta (or, I guess, “headcanon”) is necessary for creative writers, because it’s… quite literally the core of what you want to convey. Conveying it in essay/meta format is much different than doing so through narrative format,
Could be either way, I think. But I personally feel like it’s more of an issue of the way that forming a cohesive story that conveys metafictional concepts and headcanon sort of happens differently - at least for me - than just making my metafictional concepts and headcanons cohesive for people. They both take effort, just a different kind.
It’s like showing versus telling, where fic is showing and unfiltered meta is telling - both are actually really important, but have to be conveyed different ways, and are best when appropriately combined based on the context and what you’re trying to say.

The AT style is really hard to replicate, reason being the limbs are of perfect parallel lines and solidity, despite the general belief that they are wobbly.
Yeah, even though they seem all noodle-y, there’s actually a lot of implied weight behind them.
The Lich is definitely one of the best episodes ever in this series
The beginning with the creepy dream, the fact they’re stealing gems from princesses, finn copying billy, the fucking enchiridion, the Princess Bubblegum scene and scissor scene, the lich scene, the PORTAL SCENE
I’d definitely say that The Lich is the best of the three episodes if you’re looking at it in a standalone, sum-of-all-of-its-parts sort of way, but I would argue that all three episodes have some really great character study stuff going on. But in the case of FtH/JtD, it’s pushed in to the background to make room for worldbuilding, so it isn’t quite as apparent, nor is it as directly plot-driving as any of the character interactions in The Lich (which is why I’d say it’s a better overall episode than the two that follow, despite the fact that I may or may not be biased toward those episodes by means of complicated AU fun times - in fact, the character stuff not being able to vastly turn things away from their predesignated course might fit pretty well in to those episodes’ themes, but I don’t feel like rambling for a bajillion years right now). The episodes are titled “Finn the Human” and “Jake the Dog,” after all~
Okay but seriously, I’d love to make an editorial sort of thing an at least somewhat-slightly-regular posting habit of mine, would anybody actually read me talking at length about meta stuff and lit/creative writing theory applied to fanfics stuff and misc. hopefully-not-dead-boring stuff (I could maybe do tutorial-ish stuff, too, and take questions to answer, as well, sounds pretty fun I suppose)?
