Finn Mertins? More like my new favorite character.

krebscyclekid:

So… I have a lot of Finn Mertins/Ice King Finn feelings, in case it isn’t obvious already. Thankfully, I’ve had the good fortune of knowing someone who has just as many—if not more—feelings for him. Nonakani and I have really been talking and developing lots of headcanon about him, so I thought I’d write some of our thoughts down?

Before I get into personality specifics, let me say that my personal headcanon for his appearance falls in line perfectly with Nona’s design, which you all should check out because it is a very honest, well-thought out, and organic depiction of what Finn would look and act like as the Ice King some ~1000 years of wearing the crown later.

Reblogging because shared headcanons are great.  Also, ego-inflating flattery.  Feels gooooooooood.  (Though to be fair, a lot of this headcanon is Kuruk knowing exactly where to punch me in the feels?  Kuruk is good at that.)

Since we’re advertising for each-other at this point, you should all go read Kuruk’s fic.  It’s a quick read, and a powerhouse of raw imagery and feels.

Will we ever get to see what the great Nonakani looks like?

Hm…maybe someday?  I’m actually really easily embarrassed and have honestly been outright avoiding posting images of myself?  But maybe someday.

Also, “great”? *blushes profusely*

I have been waiting to get to this. *crack knuckles* Let’s put on some fitting music. *Plays “The Life” by KENN*.

Apollo Justice. What can you say about the guy? If you are sticking strictly to what has outrightly been spoon-fed to us by the game, not much. Apollo is an underdeveloped character, in the sense that we have been told  very, very little about him. He is introduced to us without any established relationships, other than his apparenticeship to Kristoph. After Kristoph is taken away, Apollo is effectively left without any familiars who could shed some light onto him as a person. And neither does he ever speak much about himself. Of course, he does speak about the present and future, but never about the past. in a way, Apollo himself is one of the biggest enigmas in the game he is supposed to be the protagonist to.

But I don’t believe that this means we know nothing about him or that he shows no personality. Actually, he has a very strong personality and I think it’s possible to deduce a lot about him from it. The fact that many people in the Fandom who I know played AJ more than just 1 or 2 times have ended up making very simmilar headcanons about him without telling each other about them beforehands only supports me in this believe.

Since we, however, don’t know much about Apollo for sure, I can’t structure this as a biography, as with Phoenix. So let’s take a wildly different approach for this. I will point out different things about my analysis and interpretation of Apollo and then elaborate on them. I will have to compare him to Phoenix a lot while doing this. That said, let’s start off right by saying this:

While Apollo’s outer persona somewhat resembles Lawyer!Phoenix’, his personality is actually an almost polar opposite.

I know, this sounds weird on first glance, especially given that Apollo has often been accused of being a carbon copy of Phoenix, but truly, I have never really felt that way. Apollo and Phoenix always have felt like wastly different characters to me, which is why Court-Record.nets description of Apollo always ticked me off. “Can be considered easily flustered, but at his core he’s a lot like a young Phoenix.” No, actually Apollo never struck me as that simmilar to Phoenix. Especially not at the core.

People tend to forget that characters, while not as complex as real people, have layers and a certain complexity (How much depends on the skills of the author) to them as well. Two characters who have a very simmilar speech-patern and some simmilar habbits, it doesn’t mean their personalities are necessesarily simmilar too. I feel this is exactly how it is with Phoenix and Apollo, especially in the English version.

(The Japanese Version actually does a very good job at distinguishing Apollo’s speech from that of Lawyer!Phoenix, he sounds rougher and much less laid-back.)

Apollo and Lawyer!Phoenix share some simmilar habbits, like ocassional bouts of sarcasm, moments of either ego-petting or (justified) self-pity and (in the English version) the level of politeness they approach dialouge  with. That doesn’t make them as simmilar as you’d believe, though. I will thus now start pointing out the points in which Apollo heavily differs from Phoenix, one by one.

Saki... i love you: nonakani: Saki… i love you: nonakani replied to your post: all this...

nonakani:

Yeah - all three of those seem like…

I’m not completely sure about who dips their hands in to which parts of the storyboarding process, so I couldn’t really say for sure.  But I’d imagine that Pen at least approves everything at some point before the final product?

(Speaking of which, they’d better release the storyboards for Finn the Human and Jake the Dog, or I shall be moderately upset.)

…Thinking bout The Lich post-wish…well, we know that those who make wishes in the Time Cube are then sent to “their wish-altered reality,” so The Lich was sent to the reality where he wished that Finn and Jake could safely return to Ooo?  Or something like that, its not very clear, which may or may not be on purpose.

Oh man, I love 3:30 am analysis time, its my favorite.

babemagi:

there are two possible reasons for taking out such a big chuck of plot/dialogue (or well three technically i guess) that i can see;

Yeah - all three of those seem like totally likely options at this point.  Though another reason I think they removed it (and this is in line with #3, actually) is that it made the episode too unfocused, and possibly made the revelations present in the final version of the episode and those about Finn’s Father simultaneously undervalued by the other.  Like, at that point, too much was happening, and when you only have 11 minutes that’s really easy to do and you have to cut a lot out.

Actually, thinking about it, there were a handful of continuity errors in the storyboard: not just the adopted thing, but also calling The Lich “The Lich King” and stating that Grod (I think it was Grod?) lived in the Time Cube.  And, then again, the storyboard that we all saw was an extremely early draft, and they do multiple drafts exactly for ironing out errors like that.

As far as the other stuff, The Lich was very specifically undefeated (in the traditional sense) at the end of Jake the Dog - and, knowing what we do about it, defeating The Lich outright and permanently (and learning such things like what Finn Prime’s lineage is, etc.) is series finale business, or at least near-finale, if it can even be done.

I just…don’t think he would become bishounen?

Now, don’t jump on me, let me explain myself-

The design floating around isn’t bad or anything by any means…but it just doesn’t scream Finn to me.  I mean, even canon Ice King has Simon in his design (though I guess its the other way around?).

So that design certainly looks like an Ice Prince, but not necessarily one with Finn the Nosed Human at its base.

Warm Strangers: nonakani: Meanwhile, Kuruk and I have been constructing a complicated...

krebscyclekid:

It is extremely fun. Nona and I are similarly afflicted by the POWER OF FROST FEELS and it’s been amazing to develop all this headcanon with her.

Ice King Finn is just—wah, a baby—but simultaneously a very dangerous individual with serious issues regarding—but not limited to—the concept of “safety” and what that entails. In short, I love him, and I am sorry to all of you who see a great bulk of him on my blog.

…I have nothing amazing to add to that.  BASICALLY THIS.  BUT SWITCH MY AND KURUK’S NAME AND GENDER, I GUESS.
