Anime Expo 2012: An Abridged Summary

Day 1:

  • Got pretty lucky with the exhibition hall line, didn’t have to wait too long.  Got some pretty awesome things, too.  (Read: HYRULE HISTORIA and others.)
  • Yuki Kajiura’s panel was both awesome and slightly frustrating: her translator seemed to stumble frequently (where even I knew what she was saying half the time), and it seems like Kajiura knew a lot more English than she let on.  Also, a brief Japanese lesson: calling Yuki Kajiura “Yuki-san” as you ask her a question when you do not know her personally is not appropriate.

Day 2:

  • The day of cosplay meets!  Specifically Valve and Madoka (for which there were two meets - one at the Aniplex booth in the exhibition hall, one somewhere just outside the convention center.  Went to both of them), got lots of photos at both~  Surprised by the great Portal and TF2 vcosplays I saw throughout the whole con that weren’t at the Valve meet, though.
  • Madoka panel!  Was expecting bleh, got hilarity!  The English cast is pretty good, all things considered (the Japanese cast is a really tough act to follow, after all), and they showed us some dubbing bloopers, which were unexpectedly hilarious.
  • Even when you stuck her in an auditorium with crappy acoustics and the performance technically starts more than an hour late, Yuki Kajiura and her fellow performers prove again that they are AMAZING.  Awesome concert was awesome.

Day 3:

  • My friend wend off to see some cosplay meets while I wandered the exhibition hall a bit more.
  • Saw rthe first two episodes of Lagrange.  It was surprisingly really good, so I’ll probably watch the rest.
  • AMV Contest was a combination of some of the best AMVs I’ve seen in an extremely long time and some of the worst AMVs I’ve seen in my life WINNING THINGS and basically turning my faith in humanity (the anime-watching section, at least) in to a roller coaster of “not-sure-if-want"s.
  • Ended up going to a TGWTG panel out of basically nowhere, but it was really fun and informative!

Day 4:

  • Nothing in particular, really.  Walked around a bit, watched some stuff.  Generally just relaxed : )

Overall:

  • WHY WOULD YOU SCHEDULE ANIME EXPO AND THE X-GAMES AT THE SAME TIME?  SERIOUSLY.  I understand that the X-Games obviously have a wider appeal and get more money for the city, but having both events at the same time causes a lot of grief to both parties (mostly traffic.  ALL THE TRAFFIC.  The five-ish minute drive from our hotel transformed in to a thirty-minute drive on day two).  Either event could have been moved a few days ahead or back to make room for both of them.
  • Bu seriously I had a great time.  It was tons of fun! : D
