Could be either way, I think. But I personally feel like it’s more of an issue of the way that forming a cohesive story that conveys metafictional concepts and headcanon sort of happens differently - at least for me - than just making my metafictional concepts and headcanons cohesive for people. They both take effort, just a different kind.
It’s like showing versus telling, where fic is showing and unfiltered meta is telling - both are actually really important, but have to be conveyed different ways, and are best when appropriately combined based on the context and what you’re trying to say.
