I am going to admit something: I am very concerned about the rest of Season 5.2 and the start of Season 6. Everything we know about it, gigaspoilers included, looks like it will piss a lot of people off. Reason for this, it removes from the symbolism and sincerity of previous episodes and even…
I never read the gigaspoilers, so I can’t comment on that, but here’s my only slightly-organized speculations, smashed under the read-more for length:
I feel like the synopsis we were given would require a VERY deft hand to pull off. Was it ever confirmed who the storyboarders are for “Betty?” I thought I read somewhere that it was Jmoyns and Acasta, which would admittedly fill me with at least a tiny bit of confidence.
In the end, it’s not a matter of the episode’s surface-level plotline, but rather its execution, and if nothing else, AT has always taken refuge in finding the obvious plotline and then deviating from it. And for this kind of story, especially, the climax and conclusion, I think, are most important - the setup is a means to an end, more clearly here than in some other cases, imo.
I can already think of a few potential, not-low-hanging-fruit ways this episode could progress (which is to say I know how I would write it if I was writing the episode), but hey, I’m not on AT’s staff ;P So I’m not going to say I’m completely confident in this episode turning out great, because it pays to be at minimum a bit pessimistic, but I don’t necessarily think it’ll be show-betrayingly bad. But who knows - “Betty” has the potential to be either amazing or terrible, just depending on where its taken.
AT certainly has an established record for going against the expected grain of a narrative, for good and for ill. As you said, the starting episodes of Season 5 ended up being fantastic; they could have easily had a very certain kind of world-traveling plot, but ended up being something very different, and were far improved as a result. The difference between “fanfic-like” and “canon-like” is often a combined matter of quality and structure, even for something like AT where different storyboarders create very different episodes. And for an episode like this, with guaranteed dramatic weight, I can only assume the writing and boarding process for it was under a lot of scrutiny. (Though you would hope that would be the case with ANY episode, considering this is a professionally-produced product, but hey.) Hopefully that made this episode the best it can be, whatever it ends up being.
(I do hope they somehow manage to stretch this into a two-parter, though. That bit of decompression would be very nice.)
(Also if AT goes down the same path that Korra did I WILL BE VERY UPSET.)
